SaaJ: Software as a Job

#core-concept#SaaJ#product-strategy

What is SaaJ?

People don't buy software—they buy outcomes. They pay for the job your product does, not the features it has.

The Core Principle:

Your customers hire your product to do a specific job. Understanding that job is the foundation of product-market fit.

Example: Customers don't buy project management software—they buy "getting the team organized" or "hitting deadlines." The job is organization and accountability.

How to apply SaaJ thinking:

  • 1.Identify the job your customers need done
  • 2.Understand the pains they experience when that job isn't done well
  • 3.Build features that help them do the job better
  • 4.Market the outcome, not the features

Key Insight: Research your audience to discover what jobs they need done. Reddit is a goldmine for this—real people discussing real problems.

The Connection:

ICP + SaaJ = Product-Market Fit. Know who your customer is (ICP) and what job they need done (SaaJ), and you'll build products people actually want to pay for.
